When I was a little girl, my mother’s favorite Mommy-Daughter activity was going to the circus. Not for the clowns, and not for the fiber-optic wand-sticks, but for something quite simple: To watch the elephants take gigantic dumps. I am not kidding about this. The entire circus trip would be spent on “TailWatch“, meaning if we spotted a tiny elephant tail rising to the doody occasion, we had to immediately alert the other guests as to the impending arrival of ele-dung. The craps, they fell mighty and strong, but the fun didn’t stop there. Because that’s when the poor circus hands had to run into the ring with a shovel as big as a billboard to pick said crap up. And oh, the times… how they were had.
This fecal obsession extended to all circus animals, really, not to mention other school field trips, such as the zoo. And while I understood the comedy of it, it never really clicked until today’s episode of The Martha Stewart Show, when one of the famous Lippizaner horses took a mighty, beautiful dump on the Martha Stewart set. It is because of the following clip that I will proudly tote my future kids to the circus and force them to watch elephants relieving themselves. And is it any coincidence that Martha made Chocolate Fig Pumpkins later on in the episode? (Seriously?)
