Yesterday, the world lost a cinematic legend, actor and director Sydney Pollack to cancer at the surprisingly young age of 73. Pollack’s directing style was said to be unique, in that he actually guided actors rather than “directed” them, and his artistic success is undeniable, having directed no less than 12 Academy Award winning performances.
Above, a still from one of my favorite films ever, Tootsie. If you’ve never seen Tootsie, a. shame on you and b. let the above picture will you into doing so. Dustin Hoffman’s lilting Southern Accent is hypnotizing, and his Oscar-winning performance legendary. Plus, Dabney Coleman is in it. Reason enough.
This year has been cursed for movie directors: First Anthony Minghella, now Pollack… here’s hoping the Reaper lets up soon, lest we end up in a world where McG is all we’ve got left.
