Deep Impact and Armageddon. Antz and A Bug’s Life. Red Planet and Mission To Mars. Dante’s Peak and Volcano. Hardball and Summer Catch.
It’s a bizarre but common occurrence in popular culture: A basic idea for a movie floats around Hollywood, then two studios simultaneously look to cash in on it and race to get their movies out, then both films come out just months apart and everyone wonders “What is it about 1998 that so demanded an ensemble-cast summer blockbuster about an asteroid? Was this Fastball’s idea?”
McDonald’s and Burger King are currently pulling one of these classic Hollywood battles themselves, in the form of ribs. Here’s Burger King’s current “flying pig” commercial for their ribs, which anticipates many of your reservations about fast food ribs, including “Why would I want to eat these, ever?”
After the jump, the alleged “leaked ad” for the McDonald’s McRibbles (rejected names: McRibbadoos, RibsMc, RibribMcDibsMc):
Are we buying this sudden fast food rib phenomenon? Surely if two separate fast food joints are coming out with ribs simultaneously, the world must be demanding them in some form, even if the world doesn’t know it’s demanding them, right?
I’m just skeptical that the ribs can replicate that same luscious, genuine, smoky flavor as Deep Impact and Armageddon.
