About 15 years ago, an Australian movie was released that introduced me to a band I would come to know and love on an almost intimate level. The movie was called Muriel’s Wedding, and the band, ABBA. Oh, sweet Swedish symphony! Oh, disco harmonies of the heart! Oh, nearly friendless coming of age! While my love of ABBA seemed to know no bounds, budgetary issues meant that I could only afford the most lavish of Box Sets. As the years passed, I found myself listening to ABBA less and less, to the point that I still haven’t even seen Mamma Mia. Indeed, I am a woman now.
But today, an ABBA song came to my attention that I had never heard before, titled “Happy New Year”. And seeing as it is not even a week into 2009, it seems more than appropriate to bring it to your attention as well. According to this song’s Wiki page, it’s original title was “Daddy Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day.” That alone means this will rank as one of our favorite songs in 2009, release dates be damned.
