Of all the random, cobbled together American Idol Finale performances last night, no single appearance was quite as head-scratching as Steve Martin’s completely unironic, jokeless banjo accompaniment of a Megan Joy / Michael Sarver duet. The song wasn’t bad, but Martin stood there entire time with a transparently hateful expression on his face…
…and I kept expecting him to jokingly break down and launch into some scripted “I can’t stand you kids” bit or just something to self-deprecatingly poke fun at the randomness of his appearance, figuring “of course they wouldn’t just have Steve Martin show up to stand between two eliminated contestants and play the banjo for two minutes, there’s gotta be SOMETHING crazy coming…”
