Tonight’s show featured the song “Lisztomania” by Phoenix. This band took over Saturday Night Live two weeks ago, playing a bonus third song. Not even the Jonas Brothers get that kind of treatment.
Their new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is already a strong contender for best album name of the year, but it also happens to full of fun, rocking tunes that can easily liven your next backyard fiesta when it comes out in May. The first two singles, “Lisztomania” and “1901,” are the kind of addicting tunes that make you start dancing or air-drumming in public without even realizing. “Fences” is a springy, ambient jam in the vein of MGMT’s “Kids.” Songs like “Rome” and “Countdown” build from mellow tune to full-bodied rock out. This album is definitely worth picking up, because there is a good chance you’ll be hearing it all summer anyway.
My favorite part about Phoenix is that they are French but they had the common decency to sing their songs in English. Having studied Spanish in high school, I’m glad I can listen to this album without feeling left out. I’ve always said rock music sounds best in the Queen’s English. “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” hits stores May 26th. Check out the video for “Lisztomania” after the jump.
