This Is What Tabloids Looked Like 250 Years Ago

HANDEL BINGE EATER2.jpg

Ah, the days of ole. When tabloid articles began like so:

If ever an artist was at odds with his work it was George Frederick Handel, composer of the sublime and soothing Water Music yet a corpulent glutton who succumbed to blindness, paralytic attacks, vicious gout and mental decline.

But now the reason for his excesses and ailments may have been discovered – pathological binge-eating which resulted in lead poisoning

First of all, what was the guy binge-eating? Pencils?

And sure, no one actually gives a care about this news today (when it was actually published), but in 1759? Whoo, chile, it would have been the talk of your local monthly de-lousing party!

And in a related story, my new band The Corpulent Gluttons is playing South Paw tonight.
