It shouldn’t be news to even the most casual sports fan that Tim McCarver, Fox’s lead baseball color analyst, is completely batsh*t insane. Not insane in a “this guy isn’t a very good broadcaster” kind of way, but in a “this human being is literally, clinically insane by any reasonable estimation, and also his job happens to involve saying things into a microphone for the public to hear.”
That being said, no amount of “That’s Timmy McCarver for ya!” could keep my jaw from dropping during Saturday’s Mets/Phillies game when McCarver defended slow-talking, southern-drawling Phillies manager Charlie Manuel by comparing him to Virginia-born Civil War generals from 140 years ago.
