Fun With WordPress Spellcheck

Yesterday I was typing words onto the two-year-old version of WordPress on which our blog operates, and couldn’t help but notice the interesting collection of names that weren’t included in the WordPress spellcheck back in 2006. Check out these red squiggly lines:

Presidential Spellcheck

The WordPress spellcheck doesn’t recognize “Barack Obama”, “Biden”, or “Palin”. It does recognize “McCain,” and, for good measure, I typed in “Arnold Schwarzenegger” too and that was most definitely recognized.

This got me nerdily wondering — which other famous figures have been deemed important enough by WordPress to include in their spellcheck?

Other Action Stars:

Action Stars

Owwwch, sorry Van Damme. Unless you’re part of Planet Hollywood, you are not an official action star as recognized by WordPress. Actually, I’ll bet Van Damme was in there back when Bloodsport came out, but he was removed shortly after Legionnaire.

Characters In Hamlet:

Hamlet

Sorry Polonius, WordPress isn’t a huge fan of your spying and rambling. No “date” argument can be made here, either — this play is four centuries old, this is clearly a case of WordPress deeming one character less important than the rest (and “Polonius” isn’t less common than “Ophelia”)

Gossip Celebs:

Gossip

WordPress to gossip celebs: “You are all f*cking worthless”.

And One Final Meta-Joke…
