A lot of people are saying that American Idol has “jumped the shark” this season, but I would say Idol’s sailing over a whole line of sharks on the back of a flying shark, Evel Knievel-style, while Great White’s “All Over Now” blares from a loudspeaker. Look no further than this video of Paula Abdul, clearly on enough meds to believe she’s still in her halcyon early-90’s days of dancing around with an animated cat rapper like a sexy pop princess (and not an older, sadder ghost of VMA Britney), whilst Randy Jackson plays the most overblown game of Bass Guitar Hero you’ve ever laughed out loud at. That’s right, Randy is helping Paula release a “comeback single”, without irony or humor (but with Seacrest and Simon), and they seem to truly believe in their minds that what they’re doing is “hot”, and not something that would be good for a few mean-spirited laughs and pithy Simon Cowell put-downs on an early episode of their TV Titanic. It’s the beginning of the end, folks, and I’ve got a feeling this season is going to bring with it things that will make the Sanjaya phenomenon seem sane by comparison.
