PROFILES IN PANELISM: Getting Super High With Doug Benson

benson_superhigh.JPGDoug Benson is an actor and stand-up comedian who you may have seen on Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Sarah Silverman Program or Comedy Central Presents. He also was a top ten finalist on Last Comic Standing in ’07 and was the titular subject of the documentary Super High Me, available on DVD on June 17. But BWE viewers know him best as the Pop Culture Bachelor and Trailer Scene Investigator, two of his many characters who look and sound exactly the same.

We had the sacred privilege of exchanging words with Doug Benson, using modern day technology. Here’s what he had to say for himself:

BWE: Hey Doug, so where are you right now?

DB: Sitting in traffic in Los Angeles. I’m a multi-tasker!

BWE: When you say “multi-tasking” what other tasks are you doing…besides driving and sending text messages from your I-phone?

DB: Oh, I’m not driving. I’m in a hired car. So I guess you caught me, I’m only doing one thing. Unless you count masturbating.

Read the rest, after the jump!

BWE: Well then, this is as good a time as any to ask you about your new documentary, “Super High Me” – which is basically you partaking in another self-indulgent activity.

DB: Yes, it’s basically a rip-off of “Supersize Me,” but with pot instead of McDonalds. I was high all day every day for 30 days. But to make the movie fair and balanced – Fox News style – I abstained from smoking pot for 30 days.

BWE: Wow, that’s just like Fox News. So…what did you learn from this experiment?

DB: Not much actually. I thought going into it that I would be sick of weed after a month of constant use. But I still like it. Kids, don’t do drugs.

BWE: Is there anything that you would be sick of after a month of constant use?

DB: I wouldn’t want to do anything besides smoke pot for a whole month. Variety is the spice of life. That, and paprika.

BWE: How was that 30 days of marijuana pot abstinence, by the way?

DB: It was easy. I was like the black girl on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab. I didn’t go into withdrawal, I didn’t throw any tantrums, except for that one day I wanted to see my family but they wouldn’t let me…oh, wait, that was the black girl on Celebrity Rehab. What was the question again?

BWE: Oh, never you mind, Doug. So whose idea was it to make this documentary?

DB: It was actually a joke in my stand-up act, and I told it to a filmmaker who said, “let’s do it.” Next thing I knew, we were doing it. Making the movie, that is.

BWE: Any other bits that you’re currently doing that could make a great movie?

DB: I’m working on a bit about murdering you – that could be a great movie!

BWE: I guess that means this conversation’s over. Thanks for the time, TV’s Doug Benson!

DB: You are quite welcome, soon-to-be-dead people!
