In a recent article in British music mag Q , the lead singer of Keane revealed how he discovered he was depressed:
I was spending a lot of time at home crying in front of Cash in the Attic. I felt really depressed. I was taking a lot of drugs and drinking.
Anybody who gets BBC America should be quite familiar with the show Cash in the Attic, where antique dealers rummage through people’s doody stained belonging to find antiques to put into an auction. It is, in fact, the most depressing show to watch, especially in marathon form. I know this because I’ve spent the last 800 weekends of my life hungover in bed, with a bagel in one hand, a shot of whiskey in the other, and the drone of well-bred British accents pouring out in front of me. If crying while watching Cash in the Attic, means one is depressed, technically I’ve committed suicide, like, 11 times.
While the BBC in England is ripe with some of the best comedies airing on television anywhere in the world, here in America we’re getting the Queen’s shaft. BBC America, which technically should be the best channel on TV, is instead the literal worst. Between 5 year old episodes of Changing Rooms (the original Trading Spaces) and terribly boring British dramas, they’ll throw us a modern comedy, such as… oh… Benny Hill? Seriously, they show Benny Hill. Every now and again, they’ll run a newer British comedy at around 12 am, such as the hilarious Little Britain or (cringe) Coupling, or, even worse, Footballer’s Wives (aka Desperate Housewives for the autistic). Where are the hilarious comedies? Tomorrow’s Office… today? WHY ARE YOU DEPRIVING US OF THE ONLY CLEVER COMEDIES IN THE WORLD, BBC AMERICA????
Ok, chillax Collins. There is hope. Hope in a website called TV Links, that has what the BBC America doesn’t: All of the British Comedies you’re dying to see but, up until now, haven’t been able to. Little Britain aside (that show has received a moderate amount of play), you can also catch the rarely to never before seen shows Brass Eye, Alan Partridge, Peep Show, The IT Crowd, and one of our favorite shows (and one of the few you can pick up on a U.S. DVD format) Nighty Night. It also includes some of our older favorites, such as episodes of the dreamy Louis Theroux and the hilaaarious Brittas Empire. Truly, I wept upon discovering it, and I am actually donating some hard-earned blogcash to them as a big thank you. It’s priceless. p.s. Say goodbye to your free time.
Here is a clip of one of my fave shows, The Mighty Boosh. If you want to know what makes me cry laughing, watch the last 60 seconds of the following clip from the first episode “Killeroo“:
