The new season of Project Runway is already three episodes in, and dare I say they’ve already outdone themselves? Last week, we were treated to the bronzed visage of an upbeat Sarah Jessica Parker, and this week…. this week, our favorite stud of morning television, Tiki Barber, took time out of his head buffing schedule to join Kors, Garcia & Klum LLP in judging our outgoing group of designers. I’d like to take this time to say that this year’s designers really are more talented overall than in past seasons — nary a Vincent among them (or is there?).
The challenge yesterday was to make an outfit that the Teekster would wear on The Today Show. Menswear is famously more difficult to make than ladies clothing, probably because a lady can throw a sheet over her head, add a brooch, and take on Manhattan, whereas a man needs more structure.
The contestants did an extremely admirable job — save for Sweet P, who we’ll give a pass to because she seems normal and cool and is very upfront about her failures, and Carmen, who can always move on to starring in the next Terminator movie. Chris‘ Mannequin 5 blazer/pant combination would have been laughable if the guy just wasn’t so goshdarned sweet!
But what surprised me last night was the choice of the winner: (Spoiler, obvs) Jack, the handsome and sweet designer who has yet to really make any sort of impression on the world as a designer. Jack put together a well-fitting pair of pants that he patterned off of the shorts he was wearing, along with a stripey button down shirt with contrast stripes and stripes stripes stripes. I’m sure the outfit was quite striking in person, but on television it sort of had the effect of one of those 3-D eye crossing posters. I was sure the longer I stared at it, the sooner I would see a dolphin frolicking with a beach ball. (The Bravo website hasn’t updated their photos — I’ll update this post once they do.)
So who should have won? Kit, of course! The navy fleece blazer she made look rich and supple on camera, and while the look was certainly not the most groundbreaking, it was nevertheless quite impressive! We love Tiki, but we think he made a mistake on this one. Also, it was nice to see that he managed to find a miniature Kimora Lee Simmons out there to marry. See, fellas, if you look hard enough you can find one too!
It’s still a little too early in the season to pick out the favorites, but here’s the good news: There really isn’t anyone that I hate yet! That’s gotta count for something right? Tell us your favorites last night in the comments!
