If Alabama football coach Nick Saban made a list of catastrophic events in American history, it might look something like this, in no particular order:
1. September 11th
2. Pearl Harbor is attacked
3. Alabama loses at home to underdog Louisiana-Monroe
Am I exaggerating? Or taking things out of context? Read Saban’s comments and judge for yourself:
“Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event. It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, and that was a catastrophic event.”
Fortunately, as quickly as Saban was able to stick his foot in his mouth, spokesman Jeff Purington was right there to help jam that leg the rest of the way down the throat:
“What Coach Saban said did not correlate losing a football game with tragedy, everyone needs to understand that. He was not equating losing football games to those catastrophic events…”
Glllllllll…… I’m jerking my collar so far to the right, my shirt just spun around on my body. Though I do find it amusing that Saban is still in the clarifying/denial phase of the comments, rather than the “path of least resistance” obligatory apology phase. I give hjim about 18 hours.
Let’s just hope they don’t put up a Trail of Tears of a game against Auburn this weekend.
