I’m not familiar with the site Editorandpublisher.com, but this article, entitled “New Poll Suggests Stephen Colbert Should Be Frontrunner Within a Month!” certainly got my attention, and not just because of the unashamed exclamation point in the title. Sure, a lot of people might say that I’m foolishly deluding myself with fantastical visions of Jon Stewart, Steve Carell, Will Ferrell trading jabs with President Colbert at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but before naysayers start raining logic on our parade, here are three reasons why Stephen Colbert has has already locked up the presidency:
Reason #1 – The Bandwagon
A Rasmussen Report national telephone survey has found that he gains 13% of voters in a matchup with Rudy Giuliani and Sen. Hillary Clinton. With former Sen. Fred Thompson substituted for Giuliani, the host of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report still got 12%. If he keeps gaining over 10% a week, Colbert should be leading the field before November is out.
I’m no math professor, but if Colbert’s popularity keeps growing at a rate of 10% per week, as this article suggests, that puts him at an astonishing 530% by next year’s election. Gonna take a lot of thrown-away votes in Florida to overcome that margin, am I right folks?
Reason #2 – Facebook
Meanwhile, a Facebook group titled “1,000,000 Strong For Stephen T. Colbert” has attracted more than 880,000 members in just over a week — making it the most popular political group on Facebook by far.
Colbert’s Facebook group is waaaay bigger than Hillary Clinton’s or Fred Thompson’s. In fact, as of right now, Colbert’s only real competition is the “I’d Let Sawyer Go Down On Me for President” Group, with 830,000 members, and the darkhorse candidate “LONDON ‘06 4EVAAAAAA!!!!”, which boasts more that 650,000 obsessively-tagged photos.
Reason #3 – History
We already elected a comedian once. And the resulting situation was hilarious and beloved by all.
