LISTEN UP: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

AUDET v.JPG

  • Seeing as this is my first Listen Up post in a while, I’d like to pass on my 5 favorite performers for the past couple of weeks… you know, just to get it out of the way. First up, a Canadian — and a French-Canadian at that. Her name is Viviane Audet, her French Pop music is both eclectic and enjoyable, sort of like Fiona Apple for less-suicidal foreigners. And it seems like she’s still undiscovered. You can listen to some of her songs on her Myspace page, or download her album on ITunes.
  • Keeping with this French theme, have you seen the Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose? It’s unbelievable. For a 4’8″ circus performing cursed druggie, that Piaf was quite a lady. Speed of Dark has a review as well as some choice Piaf mp3′s.
  • And to continue the Piafness of this post, Resonator Mag has a few more amazing Piaf tunes, as well as a reference to Clarissa Explains It All, which is linkworthy in itself.
  • Another performer I’ve recently discovered is the sweet voice of Blossom Dearie, whose piano-playing combined with her girlish voice is perfect music to sip white wine to on a hot summer day, and/or lightly weep. You can sample one of her songs over at Francophile blog Filles Sourires
  • Finally, and yes this is a bit old but is still holding strong, the new Rufus Wainwright album is perfect. Hear a live version of one of the best songs on the album, Going to a Town, over at Rock N Blog.
