Much in the way Orson Welles was never able to surpass his own brilliance after Citizen Kane, eccentric R&B auteur R. Kelly finds himself in the difficult position of trying to follow up “Trapped In The Closet”, an unparalleled epic of profound music video genius. What he came up with is this duet with Usher for a song called “Same Girl”, which tells the story of two friends who realize over the course of phone call that they’ve fallen for the, well, same girl. While the video certainly bears the cinematic style of storytelling Kelly is clearly so fond of (there’s even a twist ending!), it unfortunately lacks the incoherent bravura and confusing insanity of his previous epic. But you know, even Scorsese can’t give us a new Goodfellas every time he goes out.
